According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Ida became a Category 4 storm early on Sunday morning and quickly increased to a sustained wind speed of 145 miles per hour. Read work to restore power for tens of thousands as Henri drenches the Northeast .


The NHC forecaster said in an update at 6 a.m. Eastern Time that the storm was located 65 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River and continued to head northwest toward Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico at a speed of 15 miles per hour. 


The intensity of the hurricane has increased rapidly since it hit Cuba on Friday, and it is expected to become an "extremely dangerous major hurricane" when it makes landfall along the coast of Louisiana on Sunday afternoon.
